You support Poynter. We support facts and the free press.
Thank you for generously giving to Poynter. You’re receiving this newsletter monthly so we can keep you well informed about the lifesaving work we’re doing, with your support, to fight against misinformation around the world and help journalists deliver news you trust. Poynter is:
Giving you clarity and perspective on political conventions
After the Democrats had their turn, this week many of us watched the Republican National Convention. Once again, our PolitiFact team provided you with clarity by fact-checking every day of the convention
[link removed], answering questions like “Did President Trump deliver the largest tax cuts in American History [link removed]
?” and “Did Joe Biden state that he would defund the police [link removed]"
And do yourself a favor and check out The Poynter Report [link removed], a daily newsletter from Poynter’s senior media writer Tom Jones, where he provides analysis and perspective on how the media covered this week’s convention.
Helping you ensure that your vote counts
Election Day is only 67 days away, and it’s our goal at Poynter to prepare you for Nov. 3 by helping you vote based on the facts. Here’s a fact that surprised me: More than a half-million mail-in ballots were rejected in the 2020 presidential primaries. Regardless of who you vote for, I think we can all agree that each of us wants our vote to count. Poynter’s Al Tompkins describes the top reasons [link removed] why ballots weren’t accepted (your signature matters, people!) so you can ensure your ballot isn’t rejected.

Teaching journalists how to cover stories on social justice
This week we saw yet another instance where police shot a black man with the tragic story of Jacob Blake, whose injuries have left him paralyzed below the waist. Our mission at Poynter, especially during this time of unprecedented change, is to help keep you well-informed of complex and evolving stories like this.
One way we accomplish this is by providing journalists with the skills to elevate their coverage and probe the evolving ethics of today’s critical social justice issues. Next month, Poynter is hosting Reporting in the Age of Social Justice
[link removed], a six-week, online seminar where participants will learn to cover social justice movements safely, ethically and poignantly.
Another way is through the work of Tim Nickens, former Editor of Editorials at the Tampa Bay Times, who is helping Poynter carry out a grant from the Rita Allen Foundation to help journalists across the country cover the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Black and brown communities. His latest story helps journalists to report on race and poverty as the academic year begins.

Keeping you connected with our mission
During these past five months, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing weekly updates with you about the incredible work Poynter is doing, thanks to your support. After today, you’ll be receiving this newsletter on a monthly basis, instead of every week.
Now before you burst into uncontrollable tears, please know that this change is due to good news! For the remainder of 2020, Poynter will offer many enriching opportunities to keep you connected with our mission. (And I think you’ll still see us around...like in last Sunday’s The New York Times [link removed])
Save the date on Sept. 24 for our next Poynter Perks gathering where you can ask Poynter senior media writer Tom Jones your questions. In October, we’re launching a series of online community conversations where you’ll hear from prominent journalists on the critical topics of the day. And join us online in November for a reimagined version of our annual gala where we’ll celebrate the pivotal work that YOU helped us accomplish. Many more details to come!
Please consider making a contribution toward our mission today [link removed]
so we can continue to keep you informed tomorrow. If you recently made a donation to Poynter ... thank you!
Be well,
