Hello friend,
We’ve just heard that debt vultures are no longer trying to sue Ethiopia in the UK courts!
Earlier this year, debt vultures announced they were suing Ethiopia, a country pushed into crisis by climate disaster and debt. They seemed to be using the threat of legal action to strong-arm the government into a bad deal and deliver themselves vast profits.
In response, thousands of you emailed your MPs and signed the petition demanding the UK government introduce a debt justice law to stop debt vultures – or any lender - from using legal action as a bargaining chip.
Now, the vultures have dropped their threat and agreed a deal – and we’ve heard that it’s partly down to the pressure you’ve helped create around a debt justice law!

friend, thanks to the momentum that you and others have helped build, it appears that the UK government threatened to introduce the debt justice law we’ve been calling for. It’s the last thing the vultures want – and we’ve heard that it helped push them to drop the case.
While we’re celebrating the news that Ethiopia has avoided being sued in the UK, this is only a partial win. The vultures, along with banks and hedge funds, have still managed to agree a deal that will see them paid up to 17% more than Ethiopia’s other lenders.
This is money that should be spent on education, health and climate, not lining the pockets of wealthy speculators.

The debt vultures have had their wings clipped. The threat of a debt justice law has backed them into a corner – but until it becomes a reality, they are free to strike again on a new target whenever they choose.
This is the time to redouble our efforts ([link removed]) for a debt justice law that would help countries in crisis get debt cancelled.
In solidarity,
Wiz, Eva, Tim and everyone at Debt Justice
