Even the most corrupt politicians in Washington know that our public lands are overwhelmingly popular. They know that if they openly campaigned on bulldozing the Boundary Waters and poisoning our cleanest lakes, the voters would run them out of town.

So, they don't say it out loud. They just find a backdoor to get it done.

Earlier this year, Pete Stauber authored a completely unprecedented resolution using a procedural trick called the Congressional Review Act. He used it as a blunt instrument to systematically dismantle a 20-year mining ban in the Superior National Forest.

He didn't do this to help the working people of Minnesota. He did it specifically to open the door for a foreign mining conglomerate to build a sulfide-ore copper mine next to the headwaters of the most visited wilderness area in the country.

The bill passed. The damage is done. Pete Stauber handed a Chilean corporation the keys to foul our waters and desecrate 225,000 acres of our land, just so corporate executives can make a buck.
