Breaking news:
Graham Platner has dropped out of the U.S. Senate race in Maine.
This decision clears the way for the Maine Democratic Party to choose a
new nominee by July 27th. And while state law does not designate a
specific process for choosing a replacement, the state party’s Executive
Director has promised the process will be “open, transparent, and
inclusive,” with “broad participation of Mainers and Democratic voters.”
Yesterday, we announced our decision to remove Maine from our list of
target Senate races following the collapse of grassroots and party support
for Platner’s candidacy.
But a new nominee has the potential to build a strong grassroots campaign
that can win the support of Mainers and defeat Susan Collins—and as a
result, Swing Left may be adding Maine back to our Senate map.
We’ll consider the data and dynamics relevant to this race, as we always
do when evaluating the competitiveness of any race that could impact the
national balance of power and whether grassroots volunteer time and money
could meaningfully help a Democrat win the seat.
