Hi John, it's Zoe.

I have good news: the Trump administration just backed off an illegal scheme to rip apart one of our most important ocean monitoring systems.
Here's what happened:

The National Science Foundation quietly moved to dismantle the Ocean Observatories Initiative – a network of instruments on the ocean floor that scientists, fishermen, and coastal communities rely on to track everything from tsunamis to changing ocean conditions.

They didn't ask Congress. They didn't ask scientists. They just started pulling research buoys off the Pacific Northwest coast.

It was reckless, and it was illegal.

So I did what I always do when this administration tries to govern by chaos: I pushed back, hard, alongside my Democratic colleagues.

And we won. Critical research will continue in the Pacific Northwest and help protect our planet for years to come.

John, this is a win. But I'm not quite celebrating yet, because:

[1] We still don't know how much damage they've already done. Instruments are missing from the ocean floor right now.

[2] The Trump administration hasn't committed to replacing what they destroyed, or to stop acting until real scientists are back in the room.

[3] This is exactly the kind of reactionary, lawless governing Trump's agencies do every single day when nobody's watching.

As the Ranking Member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, I'm not going anywhere. My oversight team will keep pressing NSF until every instrument is replaced and every decision runs through legitimate scientific review, not political panic.
