Jacob Blake was leading a community intervention when the Kenosha police shot him seven times in the back, in front of his children.
Black people shouldn't have to live in fear of being shot by police for the 'crime' of protesting, driving, or simply existing. And no child should ever, ever have to witness their parent being shot.
One night later, the Kenosha community gathered for peaceful protests. A domestic terrorist, armed with an AR-15, crossed state lines to inflict violence on peaceful protestors -- he killed two Black people and injured another. Rather than stop a killer carrying a weapon of war, law enforcement looked the other way because the gunman was a white man.
We need to put an end to the epidemic of gun violence. We need to put an end to Black people being murdered by the police for simply existing. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
John, here’s what you can do right now to help:
- Join us in demanding that justice is served by directly emailing Kenosha officials. Fill out this form to email them right now (we wrote the email for you, all you have to do is hit send!!)
- RSVP to our digital protest on Friday to demand justice for Jacob. We’ll be joined by CJAF, Color of Change, Amnesty International, and organizers on the ground in WI.
- Follow and support 50 Miles More, a Wisconsin-based group fighting for transformation and liberation that's led by young women of color, including MFOL leader Tatiana Washington.
- Know someone 25 or under in Wisconsin? Tell them to join MFOL Wisconsin, one of our most active chapters, who just did some amazing phone banks and banner drops around the state.
Killers who fashion themselves “vigilantes” don’t just appear. They’re radicalized. The shooter in Wisconsin was photographed at a Trump rally. The shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas wore a MAGA hat. The El Paso shooter’s manifesto sounded similar to Trump’s words about a “Hispanic invasion” at the border. They are encouraged by our white supremacist president to draw their weapons.
These radicalized people then have access to AR-15s and weapons of war because of our dangerously irresponsible gun laws. Assault weapons aren’t used for protection, but intimidation, and were designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. We’re tired of sending emails like this. Tired of reliving our own trauma every time another shooting makes the news, knowing how many others didn't. It is clear that these horrific events will continue to happen unless we make change.
In solidarity with the Kenosha community,
March For Our Lives
