John,
Ty Masterson has some serious questions to answer.
A new Kansas City Star investigation revealed that Masterson — a Republican candidate for governor and one of the most powerful politicians in Topeka — has collected more than $1.1 million over the last decade from the WSU Foundation through a Koch-backed university program.
Last year alone, Masterson made $163,000 as director of GoCreate — nearly twice his Kansas Senate salary.
But when a reporter visited the GoCreate office, Masterson wasn’t there. A front desk worker couldn’t say whether he worked on site often — and couldn’t even put a name to his face.
Even Masterson’s own Republican primary opponent called it a “no-show job” that “smells like career politician corruption.”
Kansas voters deserve better than politicians who cash in while refusing to answer basic questions.
This is bigger than one headline.
For years, Kansas Republicans have put special interests, political insiders, and their own careers ahead of working families. Now Masterson wants voters to hand him the governor’s office — while serious ethics questions are still unanswered.
WSU reportedly did not respond to repeated requests for comment and had not produced Masterson’s employment contract. A government ethics expert called the arrangement a “public trust question.”
Public office should be about serving Kansans — not collecting six-figure checks from a Koch-backed program while running the Kansas Senate.
But holding Republicans accountable takes resources. We need to reach voters, respond quickly, organize in every corner of the state, and make sure Kansans know what’s really at stake.
Thank you,
Kansas Democrats
