I was there on January 6th, 2021.

I was inside the Capitol when the mob broke through. I heard the shouting in the hallways. I watched my colleagues scramble for safety.

When it was over, when the glass had been swept up and the blood had been scrubbed off the marble floors, I went back to the House floor and voted to certify the 2020 election.

And then, a few weeks later, I voted to impeach Donald Trump.

I did both of those things because I believed the truth mattered. Because I believed that what happened that day was not a protest, not a tourist visit, not a false flag: it was an attempt to overturn a free and fair election, and the people responsible needed to be held accountable.

The insurrection was five years ago.

But, I have spent every day and every year since watching this country get gaslit.

Watching the people who stormed those halls get pardoned and even hired by Trump. Watching the officials who planned and enabled it get rewarded. Watching a man who incited a mob against his own government run for president again and win.

And I’ve questioned how we fix this broken system, how we fix our democracy, how we fight back against Trump’s blatant abuses of power.

The best way I can think of fixing this is by electing politicians who refuse to look the other way. Period.
