Iowa Senate Race: Joni
Ernst
If you watched the proceedings of the Republican National
Convention last night, you saw one of the GOP's rising stars - Senator
Joni Ernst. Senator Ernst's infectious optimism and
her obvious dedication to serving her Iowa constituents made her
speech one of the evening's highlights and illustrated how important
it is that she win a second Senate term this November. Iowa is much
more competitive than it was in 2014 and 2016, and polls show this is
a very close race - one that may determine which party controls the
Senate next year.
Before she entered the political arena, Joni Ernst served our
nation in uniform for more than 23 years as a member of the Army
Reserves and the Iowa National Guard - including time spent deployed
in the Middle East during the second Iraq War. After retiring with the
rank of Lieutenant Colonel, she served as county auditor and State
Senator before winning an upset victory in the 2014 Senate race to
replace long-time liberal Sen. Tom Harkin.
Democrats never accepted that loss, and they targeted Ernst
early this year, investing millions of dollars in attack ads. They
also spent heavily to ensure that their hand-picked candidate, real
estate executive Theresa Greenfield, won the
nomination. Greenfield is a lockstep, party-line Democrat who thinks
she can beat Ernst with the familiar Democrat Social Security
scaremongering playbook.
Senator Ernst stands out as one of the most reliable
pro-Israel leaders in the Senate, most recently illustrated by her
signing on to Senator Ted Cruz's June 23 letter to
President Trump, supporting Israel's right to apply sovereignty in
Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan River Valley. What a contrast to her
opponent, who proudly touts an endorsement from J Street. With the
stakes so high, we must come through for our friend, Senator Joni
Ernst!
The RJC PAC has endorsed
Joni Ernst. You can help her win by clicking here

The Republican Jewish Coalition has released a new video,
entitled “Wake
Up Call,” that features four lifelong Jewish Democrats who will
vote for President Donald Trump this November.
The
“Wake Up Call” video features Cantor Sagee
Goldenholz, Mark Dunec, Dr. Caryn
Borger, and Rabbi Alan Sherman telling their
personal stories and sharing what convinced them to exit the
Democratic Party and vote Republican. It’s a message every Jewish
voter needs to see.
Watch the video here and please share it widely with your family
and friends!

The Jewish Insider reported
on the new RJC ad this morning:
The three-minute clip, which cost $10,000, will target Jewish
voters in the key swing states of Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia
and Arizona. The ad is part of the RJC’s $10 million spending strategy
and the group’s third online ad of this election cycle.
“As the Democratic Party moves away from Israel, works to
defund our police, raise our taxes and oppose school choice, more and
more Jewish Democrats are realizing that today’s party isn’t their
grandparent’s Democratic Party and are leaving the party to support
President Trump,” RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks told JI. “We
welcome them with open arms. The choice before voters this year is
very clear and we’re going to see more and more Jewish Democrats cast
their votes for President Trump in this election.”
Last Sunday we held a terrific virtual event with Sen.
Ted Cruz. If you missed the event, be sure to watch
the recording featured on the RJC
website homepage. (Scroll down to “RJC Live”.)
• The Jewish Insider quoted Sen. Cruz telling
the RJC audience:
“This is not your father’s Democratic Party. This Democratic
Party is radicalized. It’s radicalized on every axis,” Cruz explained,
citing legislators including Sens. Bernie Sanders
(I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Reps.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan
Omar (D-MN). “If you look at the voices that are on the
ascent in the Democratic Party, it is Bernie Sanders, it is AOC, it is
Ilhan Omar, it is Elizabeth Warren — it is the angriest and most
radical far-left views,” Cruz said.
“And when it comes to foreign policy, Bernie Sanders, who had
the triumphant first night of the Democratic convention, described and
said his movement is winning and has been adopted by Joe Biden,” he
added. “I believe foreign policy under the Biden administration will
be driven by Bernie, who wants to slash our military spending and gut
the Defense Department. It will be driven by [Ocasio-Cortez] and Omar,
who we see now with repeatedly antisemitic, anti-Israel comments. It
is the Israel-hating far left that is dominant in the Democratic Party
right now.”
• RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks
participated in a panel discussion hosted by the AJC on “The Future of
the US-Israel Relationship: Challenges and Aspirations for a Vital
Alliance” with Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY-1), Mesa,
Arizona Mayor John Giles, and Kirsten
Fontenrose of the Atlantic Council. The
thoughtful, in-depth conversation can be seen
here.
• The Washington Post published a profile of Vice
President Mike Pence this week and asked RJC
Executive Director Matt Brooks for his
thoughts:
[Pence] focuses on personal touches, sending notes and cards
and thank-yous, and hosts meals with operatives and donors. His office
is fastidious about fulfilling small favors — organizing White House
tours and answering calls from lobbyists, executives and others…
“As we say in the Jewish community, everybody thinks the vice
president is a mensch,” said Matt Brooks, executive director of the
Republican Jewish Coalition.
• When it was
discovered that Mary Ann Mendoza, who was slated to
address the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night, had
promoted an antisemitic Twitter thread, the GOP quickly removed her
from the program. The Republican Jewish Coaltion
praised their response, as the Washington Post reports:
“We are deeply troubled by Mendoza’s tweets and comments that
trafficked in vicious anti-Semitic messages,” Matt
Brooks, the executive director of the Republican Jewish
Coalition, said in a statement. “While we mourn the horrible loss of
her son, her views clearly disqualify her from addressing the
Convention. We are pleased that Convention officials took prompt
action to make sure the Convention reflects who we are and our values
as a party.”
• The RJC was delighted to see one of our members, Rabbi
Aryeh Spero, give the opening prayer on the third
night of the Republican National Convention. Rabbi Spero is a
prominent conservative thinker whose articles have appeared in
dozens of major publications. You
can watch him here.
Tobin: Biden Can’t Have It
Both Ways on Sarsour and Antisemitism
Jonathan Tobin has a must-read column this
week. He takes Joe Biden and his campaign to task for
including antisemitic radical activist Linda Sarsour
in the Democratic National Convention daytime programming, then
apologizing to the Jewish community for doing so -- and then apologizing
to Sarsour and her cronies for the apology. Tobin writes:
[W]hile the prime time schedule made the case for
[Joe] Biden as a centrist, the DNC’s
daytime events shown online were aimed at the party’s grassroots
activists. That meant a steady diet of political extremism designed to
appease a left-wing base that is enthusiastic about defeating Trump,
but not excited about Biden. And it is the aftermath of one such dose
of radicalism — a speech given by former Women’s March leader and BDS
activist Linda Sarsour—that is calling into question the sincerity of
the Biden campaign’s rhetoric about Israel and anti-Semitism.
…All presidents should listen to all faith and ethnic groups.
But an open door to extremists and anti-Semites like Sarsour and CAIR
gives the lie to [Biden foreign policy advisory Tony]
Blinken’s previous statements about Israel and not
tolerating anti-Semitism. Put simply, if Linda Sarsour is on your
team, if her feelings are important to you and you say you want to
include her in future discussions, you can’t also claim you are
opposed to anti-Semitism.

Gerber:
Palestinian Authority oppresses Palestinians — here’s how to help
people and bring peace
RJC Board of Directors member
Sander Gerber writes that the recent agreement to
establish normalized relations between the United Arab Emirates
and Israel, reached with the help of the US, suggests the Gulf
states may be ready to sidestep the greatest impediment to peace
between Israelis and Palestinians: the Palestinian
Authority.
Strassel:
The Obama-Biden Virus
Response
Kimberly Strassel at the Wall Street
Journal reviews some not-so-ancient history: the H1N1 swine-flu
outbreak of 2009-2010. The Obama-Biden administration flubbed the
response to a virus that infected 60 million Americans. (There are
some 5 million reported cases of coronavirus.) For example, Team Obama
promised 100 million doses of vaccine by October, but only produced 11
million. If H1N1 had the fatality rate of Covid-19, it could have been
one of the worst mass-casualty events in American
history.
