Faced with yet another incident of police brutality leaving Jacob Blake paralyzed and his three children with unimaginable trauma and the subsequent murder of two protesters, we demand immediate change and accountability to policing in Wisconsin. We support the Governor’s call for an emergency legislative session to address police accountability and transparency.
Wisconsin lawmakers must act on use of force practices including choke holds, the issuance of no-knock warrants, regular reporting from the Department of Justice (DOJ) on use of force and demographics of those involved. Please call your elected officials at-800-362-9472 and demand that they genuinely participate in the upcoming special session on August 31st.
Failure of our elected officials to sincerely participate would be an abdication of their basic responsibility. Earnest participation in the process requires engaged conversation and commitment to substantive next steps to address police reform. Establishing a task force alone, is not enough.
We need action to transform this system and to give Wisconsin residents the response we deserve from our elected leadership.
Please make two urgent phone calls as soon as possible!
- Contact your elected officials at 800-362-9472 and ask that they genuinely participate in the special session Monday.
-
Also, call Speaker Robin Vos’s office at 888-534-0063 and ask him to participate in the special session and not allow the Assembly to adjourn without meaningfully considering the bills.
We as a state need to address police brutality and ask for transparency and accountability. We also need to do more and go farther. We must address the structural racism, the ever-present underlying racial inequities in health, education, and economic well-being. We no longer shy away from, evade or deny the impacts of racism, poverty, and trauma on our communities and on our children’s future.
We need hard work, intense investment, and an unshakable commitment to racial justice and economic justice!
Time is up, the time is long past. We need action now! Thank you!
