What I’ve been up to:
Last week I spent some time as a Biden delegate experiencing my very first National Democratic Convention. It was all online and virtual; many voices outlined the priorities of the Biden/Harris ticket. The roll call of states casting nomination votes was amazing and very powerful. The diversity of voices combined with physical backgrounds in each state reminded me of what is so important to remember: we are one nation, with more diversity that any other. We are a land of opportunity and promise. A Biden/Harris administration will reflect that in every decision, from who will join the administration in the Cabinet and as heads of national agencies like the Environmental Protection and the Central Intelligence to the judges who would be nominated for Supreme Court and federal courts across the country.
Every vote matters, and I encourage everyone who gets this newsletter to “Gimme Five”. Find five friends or family members who may not be active in the political world. Maybe they are not even registered to vote, or if they are, may have not voted for some time. Explain that the results of local elections for City Council and School Board members and Township Trustees make a difference in their lives. Votes for their representatives in state government make a difference. Voting all the way down the ballot from the first choice for President to the last choice for judges or local school or fire or library levies makes a difference. Help your 5 get registered to vote if they are not, invite them to a virtual event you may be attending yourself. Talk with them about Democracy, which is an active endeavor. Talk about local issues, and share with your 5 how to get information about candidates and local issues. Talk about books you may be reading about racism as a public health crisis or the history of voting rights. Make sure your “Gimme 5” members vote this year, either by mail or through Early Voting opportunities.
Our chosen form of government requires our active participation and careful attention. Help your five see that we can work together to increase opportunities for all Americans to live the American Dream. Help me fight against the divisiveness that threatens us. Help me restore respect and honor to our communities and guard against corruption. Help me counter any and all attempts to suppress our constitutional right to vote, and ensure our freedom to make our own decisions about the votes we cast. Help me work for a better future. I’ve got my 5. Do you?
