Aerial view of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. A road is visible snaking through the trees.

John,

The pristine heart of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest is about to be ripped open for a monstrous highway.

The devastation would be world-changing, driving the Amazon to a dangerous tipping point that it may never recover from.

But if we move now, we can still stop it. And with Brazil’s election just months away, we’re at a critical moment to pile on the pressure.

Our partners are racing to file legal challenges that could bring the full force of the justice system to bear and halt this catastrophe. But it’s not going to be easy, and they’ll need all the help they can get.

John, the Amazon’s future hangs in the balance. Can you urgently chip in to help defeat Bolsonaro’s legacy – and defend our natural world?

Under Bolsonaro, development of the BR-319 highway was already set in motion – land grabbers rushed into the area, and deforestation skyrocketed by 140%.

Now, it could get even worse. Brazil’s government is giving the green light to pave the middle section of the highway that cuts through one of the best-preserved areas of the rainforest – even though the Brazilian government has a goal to end Amazonian deforestation by 2030!

One thing is clear: this road spells the beginning of the end for the Amazon rainforest. It would literally pave the way for an explosion of logging and mining interests to destroy the rainforest at their will. And scientists are warning that devastating viruses could spread more quickly to Indigenous communities.

We’re at a make-or-break moment for the Amazon, which is why partners aren’t wasting any time. They’ve already filed a request to annul the call for bids to build the highway and they’re not stopping there – with enough of us chipping in, we can help supercharge their work strategising with lawyers to beat back this looming threat at every opportunity.

This highway has been decades in the making but it’s been blocked time and again by communities willing to fight back. With enough of us powering legal challenges at critical moments like this one, we can make sure it never becomes reality.

Can you chip in to save the Amazon and our natural world before it’s too late?
