States Should Think Long-Term When Addressing Their Short-Term Fiscal Crises

Consider what happened to the states following the last budget crises that began in 2007. According to the state finance data collected by the U.S. Census, total state tax revenues across all 50 states peaked at $780 billion in 2008. By 2010 revenues crashed to $706 billion, and took until 2012 (a full 4 years) for all 50 states to surpass the $780 billion revenue haul.

Watch PRI President, CEO, and Thomas W. Smith Fellow in Health Care Policy Sally C. Pipes debate the question, “Should the Government Provide Health Insurance to All Americans?” in a recent debate hosted by the Soho Forum. She debates Professor Gerald Friedman of the University of Massachusetts, whose study on California’s single payer proposal has been used by proponents in the Golden State to push lawmakers to enact “Medicare for All” legislation in the state. Pipes won the debate in a vote among audience members who watched the livestream, garnering 73.3 percent of votes in her favor and picking up the support of 13 percent of audience members versus a poll taken before the debate commenced.
