Hey John,
The fireworks are over. The flags are folded, the grills have cooled, and the Fourth has settled into the quiet of an Idaho July. These past two days are the part of the holiday I love most: after the celebration ends, the reflection begins.
Because here's what I keep coming back to. America isn't a place. Not yet.
It's a promise we made 250 years ago and have been fighting to keep ever since. Lincoln called us to "the better angels of our nature" on the eve of our darkest hour. Langston Hughes wrote of "the land that never has been yet." Every generation of Americans has understood the same truth: this country is not something we inherit. It's something we build.
Idahoans know this in our bones. Our state motto is Esto perpetua , "let it be perpetual." Not "it is finished." Not "it has arrived." Let it be: always becoming, always enduring, always in motion. That's who we are. We're the descendants of people who looked at the Sawtooths and the Snake River plain and saw not what was there, but what could be. We live in transition. Our journey is never over.
That's not a weakness. It's the whole point.
America's greatness has never been measured by what we are today. It's measured by what we could be tomorrow, and by whether we're still willing to get up each morning and go looking for it. We are a nation in permanent search of a better tomorrow, and that search is the idea worth fighting for.
So two days after the Fourth, I'm not just celebrating what America is. I'm recommitting to what it must become. I hope you'll join me.
