Sara Jacobs - Democrat, U.S. Congress

Hi friends,

For once, we have some positive news out of the Supreme Court! Last week, the highest court in the country upheld birthright citizenship, ruling that Donald Trump’s horrific executive order attempting to strip it away is unconstitutional.

I want to take a moment to talk about what that actually means.

This is a win for the American people, for our democracy, and for our collective future. This win happened because people all across the country spoke out – loudly, angrily, and immediately after Trump signed the executive order on day one of his second term.

Democratic state attorneys general filed lawsuits. Courts all over the country blocked the order from going into effect.

Americans from all backgrounds called their members of Congress and demanded action to protect this fundamental right.

And ultimately, a class of children who would have been directly harmed by this order filed the lawsuit that went all the way to the Supreme Court. And now, the highest court in the land agreed: Trump went too far.

(You know this administration’s position is really extreme when even THIS Supreme Court says that.)

But here’s the bigger takeaway: this is what fighting back looks like. It’s messy and it takes time and there are no guarantees, but when we stay the course and keep showing up when it matters most, we can win.

Every lawsuit filed, every court that blocked this order, every person who refused to look away – that’s how we got here today. And the simple fact that this executive order never went into effect is a testament to the strength of our resolve and our belief in this fundamental right.

Look, I’m under no illusion that this administration has learned its lesson and dropped its assault on birthright citizenship – I mean, right after the ruling, Stephen Miller went on Fox News to talk about how the Trump administration is going to take “a hard look” at banning foreign pregnant women from the country.

And I definitely don’t believe we should restore much faith in the Supreme Court; after all, upholding an essential constitutional right like this one should be considered the bare minimum, not a rare victory for democracy. (And it should have been unanimous, not a 5-4 ruling.)

This administration will continue to attack our rights, Republicans in Congress will continue to bow down to Donald Trump, and the Supreme Court will continue to fail us. But this win is proof that we can stop them. In the courts, in Congress, and at the ballot box in November.

I will continue to do every single thing in my power to fight back against whatever illegal, cruel, and destructive thing this administration throws at us. Are you with me? If so, add your name to show your support and send a message that you’re still in this fight.

ADD MY NAME

I’m ready to keep this fight going, and I’m proud to have you by my side.
