Friend,
Donald Trump has set our democracy on fire, and this week's Republican National Convention has been like watching a bunch of arsonists circling a burning house and celebrating.
Putting out the fire won't be easy. No one organization or political party can do it alone. It will require grassroots advocacy groups, labor unions, faith organizations, political leaders, and more, all working together.
But one of the crucial elements of rebuilding a post-Trump democracy is a functioning news media.
Democracy simply doesn't work without journalists holding the powerful accountable and providing voters the information they need to express their will, and profit-driven, cable news infotainment that passes for journalism today is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
Common Dreams was founded to be an antidote to the failed corporate media, to provide a space where progressives and others can keep up with the news that matters and that the corporate media ignores, like the climate emergency, the importance of diplomacy over war-making, the corrupting influence of money in politics, and the ever-expanding chasm between rich and poor. But we didn't imagine that we would ever cover an election as dangerous as this one, or an authoritarian demagogue like Trump.
This is the most dangerous election we have ever covered, and we must be at our absolute best. Our last fundraising drive before the run-up to the presidential election ends this Monday, just five days from today—and we are still $42,000 from our goal.
If we fall short, there is no source of funding to keep the lights on. Donate today to Common Dreams and help reach our emergency pre-election Summer Campaign goal of $80,000 by September 1.
