The Cook Political Report, an independent political analyst, just shifted the Alaska Senate race from Lean Republican to a Toss-up, and The New York Times reported that the Senate is officially in play in the midterm elections this November.
With a geographic area that’s three times the size of Texas during low tide and a population of just 700,000, 82% of whom live off the road system and are only accessible by plane or boat, Alaska is one of the hardest places in the country to campaign in.
But it’s also home to one of the most winnable red-to-blue Senate races this year—Republican Senator Dan Sullivan is seeking a third term in the ranked-choice-voting state, but Democratic former congresswoman Mary Peltola, who was the first Native Alaskan elected to Congress, has made this seat winnable:
Winning Alaska will not be easy. Voters in the state have elected Republicans reliably for most of Alaska’s history, and in 2024, Donald Trump won the state by 13%. That being said, a majority of voters are registered undeclared or nonpartisan; the state runs open primaries and ranked-choice general elections, and voters regularly cross party lines, meaning this race is going to be close, but not impossible.
