John, Today, we celebrate our nation's independence while recognizing that the work of building a more perfect union is far from finished.

As we watch this administration’s incompetent and reckless leadership harm us at home and ruin our standing abroad, we have a responsibility to continue to fight for a nation that is truly free for every person.

Patriotism means loving this country through the good and bad, and continuing to shine a light on injustice so that every person is able to achieve life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That work is far from over.

Every day, we must continue striving to ensure that the promise of America is not reserved for a select few, but shared by all.

As we recommit ourselves to that vision this Independence Day, I'm reminded of a passage from one of my favorite poems by Langston Hughes, Let America Be America Again :

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.
