Happy Fourth of July!
250 years ago, when our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of
Independence, they didn’t expect our government, a radical experiment
where the people govern themselves, to last this long. Yet here we are
today with the oldest, continuous democracy in the world.
It’s not nothing. Even right now, when it’s easy to feel like the whole
thing is broken, we’re still organizing and still working towards a
democracy for everyone.
A few months ago, I was with Senator Chris Murphy and we got to talking
about how truly miraculous it is that we’re here today. That even at a
time when our country has never felt more divided, our democracy still
stands.
But we are at a moment where our democracy is being tested. As we watch
the news and see the extravagant America 250 celebrations put on by the
administration while families are struggling to afford gas and groceries,
I am appalled. It's easy to feel like our government is not working.
I felt that too. After 2016, I watched this man descend a golden escalator
and drive a wedge between us and I was furious. So I Googled how to run
for office.
I am so glad I did.
Because here's what I believe: if you're angry at the government, you can
do something about it. That's the beauty of this country. Democracy isn't
something that just happens to us, it's something we build together, every
single day.
That's why I'm running. Not for the title. Not for the career. Because we
have an opportunity right now to tell our kids that when democracy hung in
the balance, we didn't sit and watch it fall.
