Happy Fourth of July.

I know the Fourth means cookouts and fireworks, and I hope you get plenty of both today. But I've always found myself thinking about something in those two words the founders wrote: a more perfect union.

Not a perfect union. A more perfect one. Even at the very beginning, they admitted the country wasn't finished — that it would fall to every generation after them to keep building it, closer and closer to its promise. That single word, more, is the whole American project. It's an admission that we're not there yet, and a charge to keep going anyway.

I was raised in Nashville by a single mom — a proud union member who never made much, but who made sure her son never doubted he could build something better than what she'd had. She counted every dollar. She stretched every meal. And she believed, with everything she had, that this country was supposed to work for people like us, even when it didn't.

Her whole life was an act of faith in a promise that hadn't been kept yet.

That faith is the most American thing I know. It's the belief that the gap between what America is and what America says it will be is not a reason to give up — it's a reason to get to work.

Because the honest truth is, the union isn't perfect yet. Not when a mom working full-time still can't cover groceries and rent. Not when families lose their healthcare and rural hospitals close their doors. And not when politicians redraw the maps to decide, for us, whose voice gets to count. That's not the country we were promised. But it can still be the country we build.

That's why I'm running for Congress. Not because I think America is finished — but because I believe in finishing what it started. A country where the daughter of a union worker, or the son of one, gets a fair shot at the life they're willing to work for. That's the more perfect union I'm fighting for.
