My sweet little Daniel loved to race the school bus every morning. He'd crouch down in the grass, waiting – and as soon as the bus pulled up, he'd take off in a sprint alongside it to the stop down the street.

Daniel's first day of high school should have been next week. Would he still have ridden the bus to high school? What would he have worn? I'll never know, because he never even got to finish the first grade. My kindhearted boy was murdered in one senseless instant at Sandy Hook Elementary.

The start of another school year – seeing Daniel's classmates moving on to high school without him – has hit me like a ton of bricks. I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone, which is why I'm honoring Daniel by doing everything in my power to make sure no other parent loses a child to gun violence.

But with tomorrow's funding deadline almost here, we're still way behind our must-reach $350,000 goal. Falling short would mean we may not be able to act in time to prevent the next school shooting. As many children return to schools across the country, we want to reach as many students and educators as possible with our no-cost, lifesaving Know the Signs programs that teach the warning signs of gun violence and how to get help before a tragedy occurs. That's why we have to reach our goal – I can't bear the thought of more children's lives being put at risk.
