Clara Barton

Clara Barton (1821–1912) – Known as the "Angel of the Battlefield," Clara Barton served as a nurse during the Civil War, tending to wounded soldiers on the front lines. She went on to found the American Red Cross, transforming how the nation responded to natural disasters and humanitarian crises. Barton's fearless commitment to aiding those in need set new standards for medical care and disaster relief. Her efforts helped institutionalize emergency response services across the country. Barton remains a symbol of compassion, resilience, and public service.

After the Civil War, Barton led an ambitious effort to identify missing soldiers by launching the Office of Missing Soldiers, which received more than 63,000 inquiries and helped identify over 22,000 missing men. She personally wrote thousands of letters to grieving families and traveled to former battlefields to collect information. One of her most emotional journeys was to the Andersonville prison camp site, where she helped establish a cemetery and raise the U.S. flag over it for the first time. This dedication not only honored the dead but helped a broken nation begin to heal.
