July 4th, 1776: The original “No Kings” protest
First and foremost, Herbert, I want to wish you and your loved ones a happy Independence Day — and it’s a special one: America’s 250th Birthday.
I know you’re probably planning to celebrate with parades and cookouts all day today (If you’re planning to head down to the parades in Towson, Arbutus or Catonsville, I’ll see you there!).
But Herbert, this day has always been about more than hotdogs or fireworks. It’s about recognizing the values our country was founded on — and living those values too.
Democracy. Equality. Freedom. Checks and balances. Our Founding Fathers created a nation like no other on those ideas. And right now? It’s our job — all of ours — to live up to them.
To demand fair and accessible elections. To protect our fellow Americans from discrimination. To rein in government tyranny. That’s what this holiday is all about.
But hey, there’s nothing stopping us from enjoying a hotdog and some fireworks while we do it, too.
Happy 250th, Herbert.
