This report is the 23rd in a series that began in 1985. It provides statistics on populations supervised by adult correctional systems in the United States, including


* persons held in prisons or jails
* those supervised in the community on probation or parole
* the size of the correctional populations at year-end 2017 and year-end 2018
* changes in populations over time.

Findings are based on data from BJSs National Prisoner Statistics program; Annual Probation Survey and Annual Parole Survey; Annual Survey of Jails in Indian Country; Annual Survey of Jails; and Mortality in Correctional Institutions (formerly the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program).
