Standing up
for the Scottish
Borders
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear John,
It has been a testing year for everyone. This includes pupils and students across the Borders who have been affected by not being able to attend school. Luckily, many schools in the Borders had iPads rolled out to their classes, and supplied by Scottish Borders Council.
However, this did not solve the problem of examinations. Many students got in touch with me who were angry and upset about the way they were assigned grades this year. Initially, those from poorer backgrounds were more likely to be downgraded than students attending schools in more affluent areas. This was clearly unfair and I made my feelings known to the Scottish Government. I am glad that they eventually saw sense and changed the grades to those recommended by their teachers.
Please do have a look at the rest of my newsletter to find out what has been happening in the Borders.
Yours sincerely,
John Lamont MP

Businesses and shops across the Borders have been struggling over the last few months due to the pressures of coronanvirus. It is really important that governments of all levels work together to help the Borders bounce back better. Take a look at my video from Galashiels about this issue.
The brilliant Eat Out to Help Out Scheme by the UK Government has been very welcome for many eateries in the Borders. I have been delighted to hear feedback from businesses and local people that they have seen a big increase in custom. This is fantastic news. You have one more day to use the scheme as it ends on Monday 31st August. Don't miss out!

I had a really useful video call meeting with George and the team at the National Autistic Society recently. Constituents had been in touch urging me to take part in their Understanding Autism sessions which have been set up to increase awareness of the issues autistic people face.
