Dear friend and climate advocate,
In June, the 350 Chicago team
posted a statement in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and expressing our support for environmental justice. Minority and low-income communities bear the brunt of climate change and suffer most directly from pollution. We believe climate action and sustainability must ultimately go hand in hand with equity and justice.
Thanks to a long and successful fight led by LVEJO,
two polluting area coal plants were forced to shut down. Little Village residents wanted to see these sites repurposed in a positive way for the community’s benefit. Instead, developer
Hilco is moving forward with construction on the Exchange 55 project, an enormous warehouse and diesel truck hub that would erode neighborhood air quality just as the former coal plant did. With Target Corporation set to be the primary tenant at this new hub, hundreds of diesel trucks will transit the location daily. LVEJO has mounted a vigorous campaign aimed at Target, with the goal to get them to vacate their lease with Hilco at Exchange 55.
TAKE ACTION!
LVEJO has provided
a toolkit for doing both. (Note this kit references an action that took place on August 11th, but postings and emails are still urgently needed.)
Creating a sustainable and climate-conscious world cannot happen without also addressing the harm of systematic racism and inequity towards black and brown communities. Your participation in this action is a simple yet powerful one in the movement for environmental justice.
Thank you for your support.
