Hi JOHN,
I just finished marching in the Brandon parade, and will be in Montpelier this evening and in Williston tomorrow.
Before I sign off for the weekend, I wanted to wish you and your family a safe, fun, and meaningful Fourth—and share some of what has been on my mind.

Being an American, a citizen, and a patriot – it is complicated these days.
But what gives me hope and what I like to focus on is who we can be on our best days.
I also like to focus on our small and mighty state of Vermont, our strong (and evolving) values and what we can do, in these extremely challenging times.
We can be a place where free speech is still protected and where people don’t live in fear of persecution or deportation for sharing their views.
We can be a welcoming and safe place for immigrants and recognize the talent, hard work, and richness our new neighbors bring to our communities.
We can be a place where the freedom to love and be loved is equal for everyone.
We can be a place where healthcare, affordable housing, a good paying job, and economic security are basic rights, and fundamental for everyone.
My list goes on…
But most of all, we can control how we show up. We can choose kindness over cruelty. We can care for one another, see the best in each other, and realize there is so much more that unites us than divides us. We can make our children proud.
That’s what patriotism means to me, and that’s what I’ll be thinking about and celebrating this weekend.
I wish you a safe, happy, and memorable Fourth of July.
I hope to see you out there!
-Molly Gray
