This weekend, we celebrate America’s 250th birthday. This milestone calls for celebration, but also for reflection on what it truly means to be active participants in the great American experiment.

When the Declaration of Independence was signed, its authors put forward a radical idea: that all people are created equal and endowed with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Our country has never been perfect, but over time, each generation has fought to make those words more inclusive. Since then, we’ve become a multicultural melting pot, and our belief in and struggle for those values continues.
That ongoing struggle is what makes America worth celebrating.

As we continue to fight for a better world, I hope we remember to celebrate our progress – because that progress didn’t happen on its own. It happened because people like you stayed in the fight. It gives me hope that the next 250 years will be transformational in living up to America’s promise.

Thank you for being in the fight with me for a better and more just future for all Americans.
