** Why WHO should not have the last word on abortion
------------------------------------------------------------

You may have noticed during the recent discussion on the three-day wait that Sinn Féin, the Social Democrats and others repeatedly quoted the World Health Organisation (WHO) in defence of wanting to get rid of the life-saving reflection period.

There’s no disputing WHO does valuable work in some areas but, on abortion, politics has overridden evidence and ethics, not just recently but for many years. Only last week, the Human Reproduction Program (HRP) of WHO released another promotional video advocating abortion worldwide.

WHO’s name carries obvious weight, which helps explain why pro-abortion groups in this country and elsewhere rely on it so heavily. It is now rare for a pro-abortion group to issue a press release without quoting or referencing WHO. The tactic has become entirely predictable and should not go unchallenged.

** Paid leave after abortion proposal highlights contradiction in Government policy
------------------------------------------------------------

Women who have an abortion could become entitled to five days’ paid leave under proposals now being examined by the Government.

The proposed changes would create a new paid leave entitlement for women following a miscarriage. Weekend media reports suggest ministers also intend to extend the same benefit to women who have an abortion.

The Daily Mail, among others, covered the Pro Life Campaign’s reaction, quoting Eilís Mulroy saying: “So first they voted to abolish the three-day reflection period prior to an abortion and now senior members of government like Micheál Martin and Simon Harris are, in effect, saying to women: “We recognise the grief and trauma you might experience after an abortion, so we believe you’re entitled to five days’ leave. However, we voted to abolish the three-day reflection period before an abortion despite the fact that it could potentially safeguard you from finding yourself in that awful situation the first place.’ The position these politicians are adopting makes absolutely no sense.”

She continued: “What the Government should be doing is looking for ways to promote alternatives for women in unplanned pregnancy rather than putting all of their focus on abortion as a response to it. Until they start doing that, the Government is effectively saying to women that abortion is the

way to deal with the situation. This is totally unacceptable.”

** Even those who perform abortions support the three-day wait
------------------------------------------------------------

There has been strong support for retaining the three-day wait from unlikely sources, including individuals who carry out abortions.

One example is Dr Truls Christiansen from Wicklow, writing in The Irish Times, where he said: “As a GP who worked in this service since the beginning, I feel the minimum of three days to contemplate an abortion is essential.”

While we strongly disagree with aspects of his letter, Dr Christiansen makes a noteworthy case for retaining the three-day wait before an abortion.

The support for retaining the three-day wait, even from those who perform abortions, further underlines how wrong-headed and reckless the decision by Micheál Martin and Simon Harris was to support its abolition.

** Protecting the three-day wait
------------------------------------------------------------

If you or someone you know benefited from Ireland’s three-day waiting period before an abortion, we would love to hear your story. Under Irish law, there is currently a mandatory three-day wait between an initial abortion consultation and the procedure itself.

For many women, this brief pause has provided valuable time to reflect, seek support, or reconsider a decision made during a moment of fear, pressure, or crisis. Recent figures show that thousands of women chose not to proceed with abortion after this waiting period. We believe these stories matter and deserve to be heard.

If you feel comfortable sharing your experience, or would simply like to learn more, please send us a message. All conversations will be treated with care, respect, and confidentiality.
