Celebrate a Greener Fourth of July

Independence Day is a time for backyard barbecues, family gatherings, neighborhood celebrations, and fireworks. While you are enjoying the holiday, here are a few simple ways to reduce waste, and conserve resources.

* *Choose reusable items* whenever possible, such as plates, cups, utensils, and serving trays.
* *Recycle right* by emptying, cleaning, and drying your items before recycling.
* *Reduce food waste* by planning portions carefully, storing leftovers, and composting food scraps when possible.
* *Reuse your decorations* by investing in flags, banners, and other holiday décor that can be enjoyed year after year.
* *Leave no trace *when attending parks, parades, or other celebrations by picking up your trash and recyclables before heading home.

A few thoughtful choices can help keep Fort Worth's neighborhoods, parks, and public spaces looking their best throughout the holiday weekend and all summer long! Have a safe, fun, and sustainable Fourth of July!

Special Event Litter Cleanup
Another Litter Cleanup in the Books!

The Las Vegas Trail Special Event Litter Cleanup at Westwind Park brought together 25 committed volunteers made up of City staff and residents who showed up ready to make a difference.

By the end of the cleanup, the group had removed more than 7,320 pounds of litter and cleared debris along 20 curb miles in the surrounding neighborhoods. Their energy and determination left an immediate mark, showing just how much of an impact it makes when people rally around a shared purpose.

Events like this demonstrate the impact of working together and the pride our community takes in caring for the places we share. We sincerely appreciate everyone who contributed their time, effort, and support.

We will be back at it in September for the Overton South Special Event Litter Cleanup at Westhaven Community Park, and we would love to welcome new volunteers. Click here [ [link removed] ] for more information!

Everyday Choices That Support Clean Air This Summer

Summer in Fort Worth is a great time for outdoor gatherings, grilling, and backyard celebrations. High temperatures, stagnant air, and strong summer sunlight can trap smoke close to ground level, creating hazy skies and increasing air pollution levels.

*Why Air Quality Matters during Summer*

Charcoal grills, wood-burning grills, and backyard firepits all produce smoke and release small, fine particles in the air. The smoke and particles can build up during hot, windless days and create challenging conditions for those with respiratory sensitivities.

Fortunately, a few simple choices can help everyone grill smarter, enjoy the summer festivities, and support cleaner air this summer season:

* Plan group grilling events.
* Choose gas, electric, or solar grills that produce less smoke.
* Preheat for only 5-10 minutes.
* Use leaner cuts of meat.
* Keep your grill clean.

Everyone can enjoy grilling and celebrations while also reducing smoke and particles in our neighborhoods. Small changes, when done together, can help create a healthier and more enjoyable summer for everyone.

Summer Recycling Tips: Make the Most of the Season

Summer brings plenty of opportunities to recycle. From backyard barbecues and pool days to home improvement projects and garage cleanouts, many of the items we use during the season can be recycled or properly disposed of. As you enjoy everything summer has to offer, keep these recycling tips in mind:

* Aluminum cans, plastic bottles, cardboard packaging, and glass bottles and jars are a few examples of items that belong in your blue recycling cart.
* Remember to empty, clean, and dry items of food and residue.
* Items such as paint, chemicals, batteries, and other household hazardous waste should be taken to a City Drop-Off Station or the Environmental Collection Center for proper disposal.

By recycling the right items and keeping contaminants out of your cart, you are helping ensure valuable materials can be made into new products instead of ending up in a landfill.

Not sure if an item is recyclable? Visit Fort Worth's recycling website [ [link removed] ] to learn what belongs in your recycling cart and find additional recycling resources.

mosquito repellant
Mosquito Season: Protect Yourself by Wearing Inspect Repellent

With the hot summer weather and heavy rain, mosquitoes are active outdoors, especially during daytime and evening hours. While mosquitoes can be a nuisance, taking a few simple steps to protect yourself can help make summer festivities more enjoyable.

Prevent mosquito bites by using repellents that contain active, EPA-approved ingredients for reliable protection like DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon or eucalyptus. Before heading outdoors, apply repellents generously on exposed skin particularly on areas partially covered with clothing, such as ankles, arms, and neck.

Clothing is another simple way to reduce contact with mosquitoes. Wearing light-colored clothing, long sleeves, long pants, and socks creates a physical barrier that significantly reduces bites, especially during high mosquito activity.

Mosquitoes may enjoy the warm weather like we do, but a few small changes can make a big difference. Follow these simple preparations and make the most of summertime activities with fewer interruptions from mosquitoes.
