The United States declared its independence 250 years ago this weekend. We are the only country in the world to have had a continuous democracy for more than two centuries.

While other countries have risen and fallen, the United States has endured because of a simple but revolutionary idea: that our government exists to protect our rights, not grant them. The Founders built a nation governed by the rule of law because they understood that no institution and no public official should ever stand above it.

That was a radical idea in 1776. It’s still a radical idea in 2026. And that’s why Accuracy in Media exists ([link removed]) .

Samuel Adams once wrote, “For no people will tamely surrender their liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and virtue is preserved.”

For more than 50 years, AIM has exposed corruption and challenged powerful institutions that abuse the public’s trust. Today, we continue that work, sending investigators into public schools, universities, government offices, and other taxpayer-funded institutions to expose what those in power say and do when they think no one is watching. Then we publish the evidence, confront the people responsible, and pressure public officials to enforce the law.

This year, AIM persuaded lawmakers to strengthen existing legislation, prompted the Department of Justice to open investigations, pushed attorneys general to act, and exposed officials who believed they could ignore the law without consequences.

We don’t celebrate Independence Day simply because America declared its freedom nearly 250 years ago. We celebrate because the responsibility to defend that freedom belongs to every generation. We are proud of AIM’s history -- but even prouder to carry on this work.

This weekend, I hope you enjoy the fireworks, the cookouts, and time with the people you love.

On Monday, our investigators will be back in the field, our activism team will be back on the road, and our staff will be back to exposing corruption and defending the founding values that made America worth celebrating in the first place.
