Gov. Bill Lee signed legislation that would increase the punishment for camping on state property from a misdemeanor to a Class E felony. This common form of peaceful protest will now be punishable by up to six years in prison, including losing your right to vote.
This law is a poor cover for blatant discrimination. Gov. Lee and the Republican majority in Tennessee are directly attacking protestors who have been camping outside the Tennessee Capitol in Nashville in the fight for racial inequality and justice for Breonna Taylor since June.
Worse, they are trying to block protestors from making their voices heard at the polls, where lawmakers can be held accountable.
We're fighting back, friend. Tennessee lawmakers need to answer for this new wave of voter suppression. We're gathering 10,000 signatures by Friday calling on Gov. Lee to reverse this legislation NOW. Add your name.
