Johh,

I want to congratulate Melat Kiros for her victory last night, and I want to wish her all the best in her future. I also want to thank Wanda James for her years of involvement and service to this community. Thanks to all my friends and supporters who have lifted me up in all of my years in public service. And thanks to my intrepid campaign staff who fought until the bitter end to get our message out.

Job number one is standing up to Donald Trump and protecting our democracy. And along with thousands of constituents, I want to thank all of the staff from my congressional office, both Denver and D.C., for consistently serving the residents of the First Congressional District over the years with commitment and compassion.

And I want to thank my family, my sisters Kathy and Cara and my brother Rick and their families, my wonderful daughters, Raphaela and Francesca, who have never known a time when their mom was not in elected office and whose families keep them strong and centered. And of course, my husband, Lino, who has stood by me for over 40 years.

Frankly, this was not the way I would have wanted to end my career in politics, but I'm proud of my accomplishments from protecting the environment and cleaning up toxic waste to jumpstarting research that will cure previously deadly diseases to fighting for reproductive rights. I strive every day to be the quintessential legislator, passing bills of my own design and collaborating with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make a better society for all Americans.

As well as legislating, I've fought my entire career against injustice and overreach. I've led oversight investigations against government officials who serve their interests instead of the public interest and corporations who have fleeced Americans. I presided over Donald Trump's first impeachment trial in the House, and I was an impeachment manager for the second trial. I have held Robert Kennedy accountable for his dangerous anti-science positions.

I intend to fight against Donald Trump's illegal actions until the last minute of my service. In future days, I will have more to say about the state of our democracy and politics. The challenges Trump and his cronies pose are only the start. Just yesterday, the Supreme Court made the threat even more immediate in their campaign finance ruling.

Again, I want to thank my family, my friends, and my constituents for giving me the honor to serve. You will always be in my heart.

With gratitude,

Diana DeGette
