Republicans are gathering this week for their convention, which is why, in just a minute, I'm going to ask you to contribute your first $7 to the Democratic Unity Fund. First, I hope you'll give me a chance to explain why your donation right now is so needed in our battle to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris -- and to finally defeat Trump and his allies.

Donald Trump's campaign slogan may be "Keep America Great," but here's the thing, John: It's obvious he doesn't understand the true meaning of America. He can't fathom the idea that, if you truly love this country, you ought to work to keep making it better.

My ancestors have served this nation in uniform during every period of conflict since the Revolution. I followed in their footsteps to become one of the few women to serve as a helicopter pilot in Iraq. Then, 16 years ago, an RPG exploded into my Black Hawk over Baghdad. I lost my legs that day. But even as I was drifting in and out of consciousness, I knew my fellow service members were doing all they could to bring me to safety.

Their heroism is the only reason I survived that day. The only reason I was able to walk again. And it’s the reason I continue serving my country every day, even after taking off my uniform, as a member of the U.S. Senate. Although my fight for America's promise may look different today than it did all those years ago, I still know a tough battle when I see one, John. And this fight to defeat Donald Trump and his corrupt, dangerous allies is going to be incredibly difficult.

So, while Republicans congregate at their convention to try to paint a grim picture of America, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Democrats everywhere are showing us that there is a better way forward. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make history by electing this Biden-Harris ticket and winning Democratic seats all across our country. But that can't happen if our party lacks the resources to cut through Republicans' message of smallness, pettiness, and division. That's why I'm asking you:

Donald Trump has spent his entire life serving only himself. His past four years in office have been no exception. I'm ready to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris because they understand what it means to take the oath of office and actually serve working people. Both of them understand that this election is not about them. It's about all of us -- all of America.
