Dear John,
A few weeks ago, the National Party held our annual conference where we announced our plan for KiwiSaver - making changes to benefit you, your children, those soon to be parents, and older New Zealanders.
Read below for more information on our policy updates and what I've been up to lately.
Policy
KiwiSaverIf re-elected New Zealand National Party will make KiwiSaver mandatory and support young families.
Our children deserve the best head start. That’s why, from 1 July 2027, all New Zealand children will be automatically enrolled in KiwiSaver, with a $1,500 government contribution.
Most importantly for young families, we’re strengthening financial security for parents. The Government will continue KiwiSaver contributions while parents are on paid parental leave - so you don’t miss out while managing the added costs of welcoming a new child.
From talking with parents at our local playgrounds, I know how important it is to have that financial security - for your child and as new parents. A National Government will deliver for Selwyn families.
Affordable energy
We’re supporting Kiwis with lower power bills by making it easier for you to install solar power on your home or farm.
The biggest barrier to New Zealanders putting in household solar is the high upfront cost, and that’s why uptake here has been slow.
National is fixing that, with a new Home Energy Fund that will allow you to pay the cost of solar, batteries and insulation over time through rates.
We’ll also remove planning rules so that rooftop solar can be installed without a consent, allow ground-mounted solar on farms as a permitted activity, small-scale battery storage, and small micro-hydro systems, subject to standard environmental conditions.
These changes will strengthen New Zealand’s energy resilience and give Selwyn residents more control over their power bills.
Out and about
Prime Minister's VisitRecently we were lucky to have the Prime Minister stop by for a visit to some local events and businesses.
Our first stop was Coolpak in the IZone who were a great demonstration of businesses thriving in Selwyn and supporting our local economy.
We also swung by Gladfield Malt’s Open Day, where we talked to arable farmers from across the district and the significance of their work for our economy.
The Prime Minister spoke about the NZ-India Free Trade Agreement, the work that our government is doing to back farmers and thanked them for their hard work driving our economy.
Christchurch Home ShowThank you to everyone who stopped by the National Party stall for a chat with Alexandra Davids for Christchurch East, Tracy Summerfield for Wigram and myself last weekend.
It’s been great to hear the positive feedback on our election policies and to hear what issues matter most to Canterbury residents.
Canterbury Young GrowerI enjoyed catching up with the finalists of the Canterbury Young Grower of the Year and gave them some words of encouragement before the speech segment of the competition.
Congratulations to Amber Davy from Eurogrow Potatoes for taking out the top spot! It was exciting to see Selwyn representation and many Lincoln University graduates amongst the finalists.
