As a young leader in the Civil Rights Movement, John Lewis was savagely beaten while marching for voting rights.

Lewis later took his fight to Capitol Hill, where he became the "conscience of the Congress" for his dedication to ensuring every American had the right to vote.

Yet just a month after his death, it is clear Lewis's legacy as a voting rights crusader is in danger.

The GOP and Donald Trump are preparing an all-out assault on voting rights ahead of Election Day -- suing states with universal mail-in voting plans, dismantling the USPS, and sending law enforcement to polling places to intimidate voters of color.

The GOP's destruction of voting rights is fueled by a 2013 Supreme Court decision that struck down key provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The result has been that the federal government is now effectively prevented from fighting back against discriminatory voting laws.

Last year, House Democrats passed the Voting Rights Achievement Act to restore the provisions struck down by the Supreme Court. However, nine months later, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell still refuses to even bring the VRAA to a vote.

After Lewis's death, McConnell hailed the congressman as "a pioneering civil rights leader who put his life on the line to fight racism, promote equal rights, and bring our nation into greater alignment with its founding principles."

Yet, in holding up the VRAA, Mitch McConnell has become a central figure in the GOP's destruction of Lewis's legacy.
