John,
In case you didn’t tune in, last night the Republican National Convention continued, and the Trump campaign broke the law on national television.
That’s right, and not just once, but multiple times. By holding a politicized event at the White House, using a U.S. citizen naturalization ceremony with military personnel present as a prop, and having official cabinet members like Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speak, Trump and the Republican Party blatantly abused the power of the presidency. And clearly, they don’t care.
This morning, the White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said as much: “Nobody outside of the Beltway really cares.”
They don’t care about breaking the law, throwing our democratic norms out the window, and abusing power as long as it increases their chances of keeping and increasing their political power. And they’re hoping none of us notice or care either.
Well, I care. You care. These laws matter, John, and they were written explicitly to prevent a corrupt president like this from abusing the presidency for personal gain.
This isn’t the first, second, or even third time Trump has abused his office for himself, his family, and his cronies, and if he’s re-elected this November, we know it certainly won’t be his last.
It should go without saying, but this country desperately needs a president who respects and follows the rule of law. And we need a Senate that is willing to use our system of checks and balances to hold the executive branch accountable.
The only way we restore and strengthen our democracy and stop this slippery slope towards authoritarianism is by removing Trump from the White House, flipping the Senate, and growing our House Majority this November. Trump is not above the law. And for the sake of our country, we can’t let Trump and his feckless followers in the Republican party tear it down. It’s time to vote the bums out.
