The easiest thing a politician can do to stay in office is nothing.

On July 4th, Independence Day, the federal ban on Planned Parenthood funding
expires.Congress does not have to take a single new vote, wrangle through
heated debate, or assume a position for public scrutiny.

By doing nothing, the abortion industry simply collects what Congress failed
to stop.

Planned Parenthood and their friends have been patient, counting on exactly
this moment whencongressional inaction hands them everything they need without
a single elected official having to do a thing.

They did not have to win a new fight. They only had to wait for this one ban
to expire, and Washington is kind enough to oblige.

Speaker Mike Johnson has the power to stop it. He calls himself a pro-life,
Christian, conservative leader, and the clock is running out on whether those
words mean anything at all.

Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri saw it coming. He filed an amendment to the
Senate Budget Resolution that would have extended the ban andkept Planned
Parenthood's hands out of the Medicaid till.

The Senate voted, and the amendment failed 50 to 48. Two votes. Senate
Democrats, joined by Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, killed it in
the room while the clock kept running.

Hawley did not hide his disgust. He told the Daily Signal that his fellow
Republicans hadsquandered the opportunity, saying it would be "inexplicable to
pro-life voters."

He asked the question out loud that every pro-life American is asking right
now: "What are you going to tell them? Yeah, we could have defunded Planned
Parenthood, but we decided we'd like to give them a billion dollars?"

The Senate gallery heard those words and felt the blow of what had just
happened. The fight was not lost to a superior argument. It was lost to silence,
to comfort, and to two Republicans who crossed the line.

So Hawley picked up his pen and wrote directly to Speaker Johnson. "The ball
is now in your court," he said. "If the House fails to act immediately as part
of reconciliation, billions of Federal dollars will go to Planned Parenthood
and other medical providers for hormones, puberty blockers, and irreversible
treatments for minor children. This is unconscionable. Not one dollar of
federal tax dollars should be used for this purpose."

The Senate failed. The House is all that stands between Planned Parenthood and
