New analysis

Half of Swiss Voters Are Over 60 Years Old

Swiss Insights_6_2026_median voters

People approaching retirement or already drawing a pension are playing an increasingly decisive role in Swiss referendums. New calculations by Lukas Rühli show how demographic aging, combined with higher turnout among older citizens, is reshaping the electorate. Could extending voting rights to foreign residents and other reforms lower the median age of voters?

New "Essential"

How To Manage Immigration Efficiently

Swiss Insights_6_2026_essential migration

Swiss voters have rejected a proposal to limit the country's population to 10 million. Yet the debate over immigration is far from settled. Calls for tighter control of migration are likely to resurface. Our new "Essential" compares the most important policy tools for managing immigration, examining their strengths and shortcomings and outlining the trade-offs involved.

Corporate Taxation

OECD Framework Under Pressure: What Are Switzerland’s Options?

Swiss Insights_6_2026_OECD tax

The United States has significantly weakened the principle that large multinationals should pay a minimum tax rate of 15% on their profits. Some prominent voices are now calling on Switzerland to abandon the OECD’s tax framework altogether. In response, Lukas Schmid and Oguz Bayindir take a closer look at the issue in a new Q&A.

The Figure

71%

Discussions about the OECD minimum tax often focus on U.S. multinationals. Yet 71% of the revenues generated in Switzerland by large international corporations come from companies headquartered in Switzerland, elsewhere in Europe and other regions of the world. This fact is central to the debate over whether Switzerland should remain within the OECD framework or consider withdrawing from it. (LUS, OGB)

Antifragile Switzerland: Where Do We Go From Here?

weekly_2026_JMU am CEO-Dialog

This year’s Swiss Economic Forum adopted "Unbreakable" as its central theme – an idea closely aligned with our book "Antifragile Schweiz". During the opening CEO Dialogue, Jürg Müller discussed the concept of antifragility and argued that only those who are properly prepared can emerge stronger from adversity. Our director also highlighted areas where Switzerland faces growing challenges, particularly in education, as reflected in the country’s PISA results.

A delegation from Avenir Suisse participated in the "Dreiländertreffen" in Vienna, a cross-border dialogue on economic policy. Jürg Müller provided an overview of Switzerland’s current economic and political landscape. Michele Salvi, Patricia Schafer and Patrick Leisibach then shared their perspectives on defence financing, education and the impact of artificial intelligence on labour markets. These topics were subsequently explored in greater depth with official representatives from all three countries during a reception hosted by the German ambassador.
