At the heart of this Alaskan wildlife refuge is a narrow coastal plain known as its biological core. Every spring, the Porcupine Caribou herd migrates hundreds of miles to give birth there. Polar bears den along the coastline. Millions of migratory birds spread out from this ecosystem across the entire continent.
The Refuge is also the ancestral homeland of the Gwich’in people, who have defended this land for generations. And now Trump is desperate to let the oil rigs roll in to destroy it all.
Some of the world’s financial giants have publicly promised not to bankroll Arctic Refuge drilling – but some banks, like Bank of America, are already starting to backtrack their commitments to keep their hands off the Arctic.
Trump is trying to sweeten the deal, pushing rules that would give companies years of legal protection if protected wildlife are harmed or killed during drilling operations — ensuring nothing gets in their way.
But fossil fuel giants don’t yet have the financial backing they need, giving us a crucial opportunity to stop the drilling and save this refuge before it’s too late.
