Friend,

It's clearer than ever that Donald Trump and the Republicans will do
anything to suppress votes and steal the election in November.

Sabotage the Postal Service. Purge voter rolls. Shut down polling
places. It's all happening right before our eyes.

But even if Trump loses by such a large margin that these voter
suppression tactics don't change the outcome, we must be prepared for
the possibility that Trump might simply refuse to leave.

It's not as far-fetched as it might have once seemed. Donald Trump has
been saying for years that he will not accept the results of any
election that he loses. Each time, the corporate media has treated it as
a joke or just another day in the Trump circus. But it's not a joke to
his supporters, and it's clearly not a joke to Trump.

But what makes this scenario most dangerous is that so many votes will
be cast by mail this year due to the pandemic. That means it's likely
that the final vote count won't be complete--and winner won't be
declared--for several days after the Election Day. Trump will have as
much as a week or more to push conspiracy theories that the corporate
media will predictably hype that the election is being stolen by
fraudulent mail-in votes.

All of this is possible only because the corporate media has proven to
be so utterly incapable of responding to Trump's demagoguery and hold
him accountable. The job will undoubtedly fall the nonprofit journalists
including our team here at Common Dreams to ferret out the truth, just
like we have with Trump's attacks on the Postal Service.

We must be ready for what is shaping up to be the greatest threat to our
democracy in a century or more. That's why our Summer Fundraising
Campaign--the last fundraising drive before the final days of the
campaign--is so important.

We need to raise $80,000 by September 1 to ensure that we have the
resources to make sure the American people know the truth about the
slow-motion coup that Donald Trump is engineering. Will you make a
donation today?
