Let me tell you about Brenda Brown.

For months, she worked the sidewalks of Skid Row in Los Angeles,
paying homeless men and women two or three dollars apiece to put their
names on voter registration forms — names that could become real
ballots, mailed to an address where those people never lived.

She was certain no one would ever notice. Who pays attention to Skid
Row? Who would ever stand up for a homeless man being used as a tool
for fraud?

We did. I put on dirty clothes, sat down on that sidewalk, and let her
try to recruit me — WITH A HIDDEN CAMERA ROLLING THE WHOLE TIME.

A few weeks later, the Department of Justice federally charged Brenda
Brown. One felony count. Up to five years in federal prison. She has
since agreed to plead guilty. And at the press conference announcing
the charge, the DOJ did something they almost never do for an
independent journalist: they thanked us by name. THEY SAID OUR FOOTAGE
IS WHAT MADE THE CASE.

Stop and think about what that means.

A camera you helped pay for put a real criminal on the path to a
federal conviction. Not an op-ed. Not a hashtag. Not a "raising
awareness" campaign. A conviction. Consequences. The rarest thing in
American life today — a corrupt scheme actually facing justice.

THAT IS WHAT YOUR SUPPORT DOES. IT DOESN'T BUY OUTRAGE. IT BUYS
OUTCOMES.

And here is why it reaches your own life, even if you've never set
foot in Los Angeles: every fraudulent registration is a real ballot
that can cancel out a real vote — maybe yours. When we caught Brenda
Brown, we weren't just stopping one woman. We were defending the one
thing that makes you a citizen instead of a subject: THE INTEGRITY OF
YOUR VOTE.

It wasn't free, and it wasn't safe. On Skid Row my team was
surrounded. ONE OF MY GUYS WAS PUNCHED IN THE FACE AND NECK. We were
pepper-sprayed. We got out, kept the footage, and published it anyway.

I'll be honest with you: almost no outlet on earth would send a
reporter to sit on that sidewalk. It's uncomfortable. It's dangerous.
There's no advertiser who wants their logo next to it. So it simply
doesn't get covered — and the Brenda Browns of the world keep
working in the dark.

Unless someone shows up. WE SHOW UP BECAUSE YOU MAKE IT POSSIBLE.

There are more of these schemes, in more cities, operating right now.
THE ONLY QUESTION IS WHETHER WE CAN AFFORD TO BE THERE WITH A CAMERA
WHEN THEY HAPPEN.

P.S. The DOJ thanked us by name. A judge will hand down the sentence.
But it started with supporters deciding this work was worth funding
— and a camera on a Skid Row sidewalk. The next investigation is
already underway. HELP ME GET IT ON TAPE.
