Stop Donald Trump from raiding the Social Security Trust Fund.
|
Friend,
This week we learned that if Donald Trump is successful with his attacks against Social Security, the Social Security Trust Fund will be completely depleted by 2023.
Ever since the pandemic struck, Trump has been attempting to cut or eliminate FICA contributions―Social Security’s dedicated funding, which Trump calls the “payroll tax.” Earlier this month, in what is likely an unconstitutional executive action, Trump bypassed Congress and instructed the IRS to stop collecting the payroll tax.1
When signing his executive action, Trump told a room filled with his rich country club buddies that, if re-elected, he’d “terminate” Social Security’s dedicated funding―reducing that annual funding from nearly $1 trillion to $0.2
This week, the Social Security Administration’s Chief Actuary, Stephen C. Goss, wrote a letter to Congress. He stated that if Social Security’s dedicated funding is taken away―as Trump intends to do―Social Security disability benefits will “become permanently depleted in about the middle of calendar year 2021” and that old-age and survivors benefits “would become permanently depleted by the middle of calendar year 2023.”3
That’s horrifying and unacceptable.

Social Security is one of the most beloved and successful social insurance programs in our country’s history. Before Social Security, millions of seniors lived in poverty. Today, Social Security keeps millions of people and families from falling into poverty and has been expanded over the years to support seniors, children, surviving spouses, and people with disabilities.
Even before the pandemic struck, Trump has attempted to undermine Social Security―proposing multiple federal budgets that included cuts to our earned benefits.
And, earlier this year, in Davos, Switzerland in a room filled with economic elites, Trump said that if re-elected he’d move to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Thank you for all you do to fight for economic justice for all.
