Happy Women’s Equality Day! The day is meant to commemorate the certification of the 19th Amendment, which was adopted 100 years ago in 1920.
It was a historic victory for women of the time, but it’s important to remember that it didn’t include all women — women of color still couldn’t exercise this right until years later. To this day, a hundred years after the 19th Amendment was certified, women in our country still face challenges with discrimination in areas like equal pay, housing, education, employment, representation, and more.
I’ve been a long-time advocate for the passage of The Equal Rights Amendment which would establish women’s equality in the Constitution and provide protections against discrimination based on sex.
Earlier this year, the deadline for ratification was finally removed after Virginia became the 38th and final state needed to ratify the ERA. In fact, two of the colleagues I’ve teamed up with on several ERA initiatives are Delegate Hala Ayala and Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy — two bold, progressive women from Virginia who helped ensure the ERA would be ratified by the final, required 38th state.
And now, the three of us are joining forces once again to fight for The Equal Rights Amendment. In honor of Women’s Equality Day, we’re kicking off a new public action petition calling on you to help show strong public support of the ERA. Will you sign our petition now demanding that the Senate finally remove the deadline for the ERA?

Women’s rights are human rights— that includes women of color, migrant women, transgender women, and all women. And we must continue to fight until full women's equality is achieved.
Thanks for taking action,
Carolyn
