What to Know: TPPF Senior Fellow Alice Marie Johnson will be speaking at the Republican National Convention this week.

The TPPF Take: Sentenced to life in prison for a single, non-violent drug conviction, Alice Marie Johnson was pardoned last year by President Trump.

“I’ll be there talking about criminal justice reform, that is my main mission,” she says. “I’m there because I’ve been affected by our criminal justice system, and that’s my mission.”

Don’t Panic

What to Know: Some environmental groups are hyperventilating over the Trump administration’s revised rules on methane emissions.

The TPPF Take: No, this isn’t the end of the world.

“While environmental groups deride methane as a “super pollutant,” its climate impact is inconsequential,” says TPPF’s Jason Isaac. “The EPA should be applauded for making the correct policy decision, one that will eliminate yet another burden on energy producers to the benefit of American energy workers and energy consumers.”

1619 or 1776?

What to Know: As American kids go back to school this week (many of them virtually), some will be taught about our nation via the New York Times’ “1619 Project” and its historical revisionism.

The TPPF Take: The 1619 Project claims that America’s “true founding” arose out of slavery, not the Declaration of Independence.

“Of course, it is important to study the history of slavery in this country. But what if America was not unique in holding slaves?” asks TPPF’s Tom Lindsay. “Far from ignoring or minimizing the history of slavery in the United States, presenting the full facts about the history of slavery worldwide is requisite to understanding American slavery—as well as our successful efforts to end it.”
