Back to school travel

Even in a normal year the return to school puts demand on public transport and roads following the quieter summer holiday period.

This year, the effects of the covid-19 pandemic have the potential to place more strain on our networks, in particular on public transport where social distancing guidelines reduce the amount of space available.

We need to make sure everyone can travel safely, so we're encouraging people who live close to school to consider walking, cycling or even scooting when schools reopen next week.

If you need to use public transport, check the timetable with the operator, and follow their guidelines to stay safe.

People make the most of through traffic closure
Cycling at Victoria Embankment
Road open

Victoria Embankment has been closed to through traffic for more than three weeks as part of emergency plans to encourage more people to travel by foot and bike and support a greener recovery from Covid-19.

It's been great to see Ridewise and Sustrans using the road to help people get pedalling, and we've loved seeing photos and stories on social media from people enjoying the safer space. We're continuing to monitor the impact of the trial and would welcome any comments.
