AFSCME Council 20 holds 1st virtual convention More than 150 participants, including more than 100 delegates and alternates from 35 locals, participated in AFCSME District Council 20’s first virtual convention on August 22. The Council represents thousands of municipal, state, federal, and private sector employees in the metropolitan Washington and Northern Virginia region. Running unopposed for his third term, Council 20 Executive Director Andrew Washington was re-elected by acclamation and urged the delegates to “remain vigilant in our organizing efforts of essential and frontline workers.” He also strongly urged support for former Vice President Joe Biden in the upcoming November election. In addition to Council 20 executive board elections, the daylong convention reaffirmed the District Council’s commitment to “advocate for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services, and prosperity for all working families.”
MWC DC endorsement process underway The Metro Washington Council’s endorsement process for the District of Columbia City Council candidates in the November General Election has officially begun. Last week, all of the official at-large candidates, as well as those running in Wards 2 & 7 (Wards 4 and 8 were endorsed during the primary) received their candidate questionnaires and will have until September 9 to return them. Their returned questionnaires will serve as their RSVP for candidate interviews that will be held on September 16. “DC COPE is excited to review and screen the candidates in all of these very important council seats and we look forward to supporting and electing great candidates who will vocally support labor unions and champion legislation that protect and raise the quality of life for working people,” said MWC Political and Legislative director David Stephen
Painters video celebrates pre-apprenticeship trainingIUPAT District Council 51 celebrated the completion of pre-apprenticeship glazier training by the Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corp Youth Works with a short video posted on Facebook. The union urged the young adults training at the Finishing Trades Institute to “continue to strive toward your individual goals!” IUPAT DC 51 hosted the 5-week summer program at FTI, focusing on instruction and practice for participants who had an interest in the construction and trades industry.
In Memoriam: IBEW IVP Brian MalloyIBEW Fourth District International Vice President Brian Malloy lost a heroic battle against cancer on Saturday August 22. “Brian served the IBEW and its members with energy and distinction,” said IBEW 1900. “Local 1900 knew Brian well as our International Vice President. We will miss him. Our sincere condolences go out to his family.” The IBEW Fourth District covers Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
