I spoke on the Senate floor because Donald Trump’s latest attack on vote by mail is dangerous, unconstitutional, and wrong.
Voting in America is a right.
Americans have lost their lives to protect that right. Women and people of color had to fight for it. My father and uncle both fought in World War II, and I guarantee you they fought for our right to vote.
That is why I will not stay quiet while this administration tries to make it harder for people to cast a ballot and have it counted.
In Washington, vote by mail has worked for more than four decades. Since 2011, it has been the standard for elections across our state. It is safe, secure and reliable.
But now the Trump administration is trying to create new barriers, new delays, and new uncertainty. That is how modern voter suppression works. It is not always obvious intimidation. Sometimes it is bureaucracy. Technicalities. Rules that make it harder for eligible voters to know whether their ballot was counted. A voter could do everything right and still be left wondering whether their vote counted.
That is preposterous.
Donald Trump does not get to run state elections. Federal agencies do not get to decide who receives a ballot. The Postal Service does not get to decide whose vote counts.
I am going to keep fighting back, but I need your support.
