Dear John,

Hope can be hard to come by in the midst of a hunger crisis. But thanks to friends like you, I do have hope.

I won’t deny that there are some grim numbers in our recent "The Longest Summer" report, but your generosity continues to make a difference. Millions of meals are being served every day. Broad public understanding of the hunger crisis, both now and before the pandemic, has risen. And that in turn has helped put pressure on Congress to enact necessary food aid reforms to meet the needs of a very hungry nation.

But we’ve got our work cut out for us, and as our partner in the fight against childhood hunger, you deserve to know what we’re up against.

Here are just a few snapshots from the report:

  • Nearly half of all American families are living with hunger, and the situation is even worse for latino and Black families.
  • 39% of American families are skipping rent and other bills so they can buy food.
  • More than half of surveyed parents say they are skipping meals or eating less in order to keep their kids fed.
  • Unprecedented numbers of families who were self-sufficient until now are depending on food banks and government aid.
John, make no mistake. We’re not giving up, even in the face of a challenge like this one.

With your help, we’re pushing forward to end childhood hunger once and for all. I believe with all my heart that’s an achievable goal one day. Please know how grateful we are for your help. And please don’t lose hope.

With gratitude and determination,

Amy Zganjar
