Four years ago yesterday, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping away a fundamental freedom for millions of Americans. After this decision, extremist leaders across the country rushed to ban abortion and criminalize care for women — leading to sickness and even death.
I am proud that Maryland has acted to safeguard reproductive rights. We passed a constitutional amendment that enshrined reproductive rights in our state constitution with more than three-quarters of the vote. Additionally, I helped ensure we could purchase nearly three years’ worth of Mifepristone to ensure our residents continue to have access to medical abortions.
Restrictions and bans do not end abortions; they only end safe medical abortions. Reproductive justice is a matter of public health, safety, economics, and fairness. Women in dozens of states still lack the basic right to make decisions about their own bodies. True freedom cannot exist if anyone is denied autonomy over their own body.
As Maryland’s Comptroller, I will always protect a person’s right to privacy and bodily autonomy. Thank you for joining me in this effort!
My best,
